And so it's begun. The enchanting, beautiful, terrible winter has begun with its first flitter of snow in Chicago. As the snow begins to fall outside the window of my cozy living room, I often forget how fortunate I am to be so warm.
*****
Winter's Ashes
Softly drifting from the skies
White as ashes on her hair and in her eyes
Chilling bones compelling sighs
Winter comes: all must die.
By twinkling lights along the street
She wonders as she wanders on frozen feet
If she might get a bite to eat
Or whether Jesus she might meet.
{Hear her calling in the wind,
"Won't somebody let me in?"
Winter's ashes on her face.
Will anybody give her grace?}
Cold as ice upon her skin
Not one soul will let her in
In the arms of bitter wind,
She won’t come this way again.
Numb, her heart, yet still it beats
Though it’s broken, though she weeps
On she walks and never sleeps
While to her frozen grave she creeps.
{Hear her calling in the wind,
"Won't somebody let me in?"
Winter's ashes on her face.
Will anybody give her grace?}Turn your head and your heart, too
Lest she steal or pierce it through.
Close your door and eat your fill.
If you won’t have her, Someone will.
Softly drifting from the skies
White as ashes on her hair and in her eyes
Chilling bones compelling sighs
Winter comes: she will rise.

If these words intrigue you at all (and you are over 21 with $5 to spare), I encourage you to come out and hear it set to music, this coming Sunday night. I'll be playing a set at 10 pm with some very good friends and fine musicians, Jenna Satterthwaite, Eric Pazdziora and Petras (who does not have a website, but -- I can assure you -- is a master of his art). The Red Line Tap is where the action's at, and it really won't be the same without you! The live music begins at 9pm with the Dawn Xiana Moon Trio.
It's gonna be awesome . . . and that song you posted the lyrics to is SO beautiful! =) I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteOh to be in Chicago to hear the song. Thank you for sharing the words. Have a wonderful time, and stay warm.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jenna and Lynda! Hopefully we'll get a good video or at least a good sound recording, so I plan to post some of those for the non-Chicagoans to hear. :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you do get a recording--I definitely want to hear it! Sadly, we can't go Sunday night though.
ReplyDeleteI understand, Linnea! I'm sure this has been a busy weekend for you two! :)
ReplyDeleteLoved hearing Winter's Ashes. It's hauntingly beautiful. I loved the "I Wonder as I wander" melody that you inserted with the words. That was so clever. :D
ReplyDeleteThose words are very touching, Carrie. Very poignant. I hope it challenges all who hear it to be Yeshua for those who need Him most.
